The KIR-OSHD features an optical smoke detector alongside a rate-of-rise heat sensor equipped with a fixed temperature threshold. Working in tandem, these sensors effectively identify both slow-burning, smoldering fires and rapidly spreading, flaming fires.

Similar to other detectors in the Kidde Intelligent Optica Series, the KIR-OSHD is a smart device that collects analog data from several optical sensors and transforms this information into digital signals. By employing two optical wavelengths and various detection angles, the KIR-OSHD can distinguish between genuine smoke and particles that do not indicate a real fire. The particle information is processed through digital filters, which use a series of ratios to eliminate signal patterns commonly associated with false alarms, thereby minimizing nuisance triggers. To determine whether to initiate an alarm, the detector’s internal microprocessor evaluates and interprets all optical sensor inputs, comparing the results against its programmed parameters.
